The EM is the oldest of the three Innenstadtkinos and the house the business began with. Eugen Mertz, an architect from a Stuttgart winegrowing family, bought the bombed-out Marquardt building beside Schlossplatz in 1947, rebuilt it as a commercial block, and on 12 July 1950 opened a cinema in its big hall under his own initials. He died two years later; the family still runs the cinemas, now in the third generation. The EM occupies the basement of the Marquardtbau, entered from Bolzstraße, and today has four screens, from 220 seats down to a room of 36. It carries by far the largest schedule of the three — current releases, family films and arthouse side by side — with a steady if smaller number of original-version showings among the German-dubbed prints.
