City 46 – Kommunalkino Bremen

Bremen's kommunales Kino, run by the non-profit Kommunalkino Bremen e.V., founded in October 1973 and opened in May 1974 with Kuhle Wampe in front of 203 people. For nineteen years it had no room of its own and played as a guest in up to eight venues a month, the Oslebshausen prison among them; it got a screen at Waller Heerstraße 46, which gave it the name Kino 46, and moved to Birkenstraße 1 in October 2011. Two auditoria in a 1950s cinema: Kino 1 with 160 seats and an induction loop, Kino 2 a 90-seat studio with a stage, plus a 60-place seminar room built for film education. 35 mm, 16 mm, 8 mm and DCP all run here, with live music for silent films. Four to six screenings a day, arranged in themed strands rather than runs, and subtitled originals are the default rather than the exception — around three screenings in five.
