Cinémathèque Leipzig

Founded in 1991 as AG Kommunales Kino Leipzig, the Cinémathèque spent three decades in other people's rooms — the Polish Institute on Am Brühl, the naTo, UT Connewitz, the Moritzbastei — before opening a place of its own at Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 109 in the Südvorstadt in October 2023. It is deliberately small: a 40-seat club cinema beside a multi-purpose room used for exhibitions on film and media art. The programme mixes current arthouse releases with curated series, retrospectives and work at the edge of what still counts as film, and everything runs in the original language with subtitles wherever a print allows it. Tickets are 8 euros, 4 with a Leipzig-Pass, free for refugees, and the exhibitions cost nothing. The association behind it is largely volunteer-run and has taken the Kinematheksverbund's programme prize year after year, including the Lotte-Eisner-Preis in 2020.
