Cinema Wuppertal

Film has run at Berliner Straße 88 in Oberbarmen since 1919 by the cinema's own account, at the eastern end of Wuppertal and a short walk from the Schwebebahn. The house that stood here before, the Moderne Theater Oberbarmen, was bombed out five weeks before the end of the war and rebuilt in about four months to a design by Werner Rosendahl, which is why the street front still reads as a plain 1950s apartment block rather than a cinema. It became a three-screen house in 1980 and now runs the halls Cinema, Studio and Casablanca, 462 seats between them. Mustafa El Mesaoudi and Jochen Kuhnert run it together with the Rex in Elberfeld, and it belongs to the Europa Cinemas network. The billing is arthouse, with European titles, documentaries and children's films, but current mainstream releases share the schedule, and about one screening in six is subtitled rather than dubbed.
