CAPITOL Arthouse Mainz

The Capitol opened in 1933 at Neubrunnenstraße 9 and is the oldest cinema in Mainz. The plot had been a manorial estate whose riding hall later served as factory rooms, until Albert Kämmer-Le Bret, owner of a photographic studio, had the Mainz architect Emil Dhrauf build a film palace there. The Allgemeine Zeitung's opening report describes the name Capitol in metre-high letters across the front and an auditorium in red, its walls hung with fabric for better sound. The cinema closed in November 2023 and reopened in August 2024 under the Frankfurt group Arthouse Kinos. There is one screen. The Spotlight sneak shows a surprise film every two weeks, international titles in the original with German subtitles. On the last Tuesday of the month at 2pm the house screens for older guests, with the city's senior citizens' council. FILMZ, the festival of German cinema, has its main venue here.
