One screen and 201 seats on the Limmerstraße in Linden, showing films since 1908, when the 23-year-old Wilhelmine Kaufmann opened a 300-seat Kintopp in a former dance hall — the first cinema in Hannover's working-class district, and one of the oldest in Germany still running. Not without breaks: a bomb next door closed it in November 1944 and it reopened in July 1945; a fire in May 1981 gutted the auditorium, and the rebuild uncovered a boarded-over stucco ceiling. In 1973 the owner let a film-mad student, Hans-Joachim Flebbe, choose the titles; the house sold out and became one of Germany's first Programmkinos, and Flebbe went on to found CinemaxX. The programme is arthouse and classics, with an OmU-Nachtstudio at 22:30 running international films in the original with German subtitles. Roughly a tenth of the calendar is live comedy: DESiMOs Spezial Club has played here since 2002.
