Apollo Gelsenkirchen

The multiplex on Willy-Brandt-Allee, in the Arena Park beside the Schalke stadium, opened on 19 March 1991 as the Constantin-Warner. It was the first multiplex in the Ruhr, built where the Berger Feld drive-in had stood and launched with the premiere of Volker Schlöndorff's Homo Faber. It ran through several names, Village, Kinopolis and Multiplex an der Schalke-Arena, before closing abruptly in January 2009. Weeks later the Bochum exhibitor Michael Meyer took it over, reopened it as Apollo Cinemas and had the foyers and all nine screens re-seated, leaving the glass front as it was. The halls hold between roughly 130 and 350, and parking in front is free. The programme is mainstream first-run, current releases, 3D and late shows on Friday nights. Almost everything scheduled here plays in German.
