Neue Kammerspiele

The Kammerspiele on Karl-Marx-Straße were built as a picture house between 1936 and 1938 by Karl Bornemann, who also ran it. After his son Wolfgang Bornemann fled to West Germany with his family in 1961, the cinema was nationalised, and it was rebuilt in the early 1970s. Since November 2012 the house has been run by the KulturGenossenschaft Neue Kammerspiele eG, the first cultural cooperative in Brandenburg. The large hall seats up to 350 in historic fixed rows, with three sofas in the boxes, and projects both digitally and on 35 mm. The small hall holds up to 100. The programme is arthouse, weighted towards European film and the great films of the past, and some titles run in the original with German subtitles. The cinema has been a member of Europa Cinemas since 2018. Readings, music and theatre are on the programme alongside the films, and every room is step-free.
