KulturKino Zwenkau

The KulturKino Zwenkau stands at Hugo-Haase-Straße 9 and opened on 28 December 1927 as the Walhalla Lichtspiele. The photographer Friedrich Franz Rosenberg had the Art Deco house built in six months, with more than 700 seats, to a design by the Zwenkau firm Harnisch & Germer. From 1955 it was the Volkslichtspiele Zwenkau, and after the 1973 to 1976 conversion the Kulturhaus Freundschaft. It closed in July 1990, fell into decay and was due to be demolished. Shortly before that, residents of Zwenkau and Leipzig founded the Kulturinitiative Zwenkau e.V. in 2003, and after thousands of hours of volunteer work the house reopened in March 2017. Today it is a sociocultural centre with concerts, theatre and workshops alongside the cinema. The film programme includes the KaffeeKino with coffee and cake, KinoPLUS, where babies and handicrafts are expressly welcome, the FerienKino and the Kino anno dazumal series, projected from 35mm reels. Tickets are reserved through the form in the programme or by phone and collected at the box office, and seating is unreserved.
