The Kino im Kasten, KiK for short, is the student programme cinema of the TU Dresden, run by the association Objektiv e.V. It plays in the large lecture hall of the building on August-Bebel-Straße, a little way off the main campus, which turns into a cinema with a few adjustments. The building belonged to the NVA military academy Friedrich Engels, and lecture hall 3 ran training films on two Meopta 35 mm projectors from Czechoslovakia. Screenings began in January 1993 with Once Upon a Time in the West. The building was renovated from 2012, and the cinema reopened on 16 May 2014 with Spur der Steine. The semester programme runs mostly from 20:30, and not at all in August and September. Instead of new releases it takes films of every genre and era, often in the original with or without subtitles, some from 35 mm prints, plus silent films with live music. Tickets are 4.00 euros, 3.00 reduced, cash only and only at the door.
