The Karlstorkino is Heidelberg's Kommunales Kino. It belongs to Medienforum Heidelberg e.V., which was founded in 1990 as an alliance of several Heidelberg cinema and media initiatives. Since 28 October 2022 it has been in the Südstadt on Marlene-Dietrich-Platz, inside the Karlstorbahnhof cultural centre. The programme is non-commercial and pairs film history with current films from around the world, often with an introduction or a talk. Films run in their original language with German subtitles wherever possible, occasionally with English ones, and German films are shown without subtitles. Zum Goldenen Hirsch, the platform for young filmmakers from the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, has run here since 2007 and is now a year-round short film festival. In 2004 the Karlstorkino was voted the third-best Kommunales Kino in Germany, and for 2019 the Medienforum won first place in the Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek's cinema prize in the category "Kino, das bildet". Its Aktive Medienarbeit department lends cameras, tripods and lighting for non-commercial film projects and runs an analogue darkroom with the Kalamari Klub.
