Every summer the Thalia Programmkino from Babelsberg and the Waschhaus stage the Kinosommer together, on the event square in front of the Waschhaus in the Schiffbauergasse. The season runs from early July to late August. The open-air ground lies directly on the Havel, and the audience watches from deck chairs. Films start once it is dark enough, later in July than in August. The programme is current releases alongside documentaries and music films, sometimes extended by a live concert or a conversation with the director or cast. Late in the season the films run with headphones, handed out by the Waschhaus, so that neighbouring events on the Schiffbauergasse site are not disturbed. The Waschhaus itself was built in 1880 to 1882 as the royal garrison steam laundry and is a listed building. Artists squatted it in 1992, and regular cultural programming began in 1993.
