Hasenheide, 10967 Berlin

One of Berlin's largest and most beloved open-air cinemas, the Freiluftkino Hasenheide unfolds each summer within the broad green expanse of Volkspark Hasenheide on the Neukölln side of the Tempelhofer Berg. Two screens — the older Hauptbühne and the smaller Neue Bühne — operate from late May until mid-September, offering a programme that ranges from family matinees and recent German releases to original-version arthouse selections. The natural amphitheatre of the park, ringed by old chestnut and oak trees, gives the venue a slightly wild atmosphere that no rooftop cinema can match. Long-standing collaborations with film distributors and the cinema's loyal Neukölln following make this one of the city's most consistently programmed summer institutions. It is the kind of place where the film begins as the last colour leaves the sky and the bats start their evening rounds.
