Each summer the Kulturforum transforms into an open-air cinema set between two of Berlin's most celebrated cultural institutions — the Neue Nationalgalerie and the Philharmonie. Presented in partnership with ARTE, the Franco-German television channel, the Sommerkino programmes a generous mix of seasonal highlights, beloved classics, and thematic retrospectives under the open sky. The setting is extraordinary: Mies van der Rohe's glass temple on one side, Scharoun's golden concert hall on the other, and the screen rising between them. It is a seasonal ritual that draws Berliners from across the city, blending picnic-blanket informality with genuinely ambitious film selection. When autumn comes and the screen comes down, the Kulturforum feels just a little emptier.
