For a few evenings each August the Schaubühne Lindenfels sets up a screen at the Völkerschlachtdenkmal and seats its audience on the monument's outer stairway — the option for anyone who would rather sit on the steps than climb the 500 of them to the viewing platform. Bruno Schmitz's 91-metre monument in Probstheida was inaugurated on 18 October 1913, a century to the day after the Battle of the Nations that drove Napoleon out of Germany, and after dark it makes a backdrop no auditorium can supply. The pop-up is run with the Stiftung Völkerschlachtdenkmal, screenings begin at 21:00, and the selection is deliberately local: films about Leipzig and about the years after 1989, shown in the original version.
