Opened in 1963 as the German Democratic Republic's flagship premiere cinema, Kino International stands as a monument to socialist-modernist architecture on Karl-Marx-Allee. Designed by architect Josef Kaiser, its monumental foyer and 550-seat auditorium once hosted every major East German film premiere. The building's sweeping glass facade and geometric reliefs embody the idealism of an era that believed fervently in the public purpose of cinema. Today it serves as a Berlinale venue and home to the long-running MonGay LGBTQ+ screening series, weaving new cultural threads through its storied halls. Currently undergoing comprehensive renovation, it is expected to reopen in 2026 with its architectural grandeur fully restored.
