Daimlerstraße 55, 84478 Waldkraiburg
Waldkraiburg, a Bavarian town southeast of Munich, holds a singular place in German history: it was built almost entirely from scratch after 1945 to house ethnic German refugees expelled from the Sudetenland. This planned origin gives the town a grid-pattern rationality unusual for a Bavarian settlement, and its cultural institutions were consciously established to forge community among displaced populations. The Cineplex on Daimlerstrasse continues that civic-building tradition, providing a shared cultural space in a town whose existence is itself an act of collective will. The surrounding landscape of the Inn valley is gentler and more pastoral than the town's dramatic origins might suggest.
