Königstraße 16, 59065 Hamm
Hamm, a Westphalian city in the eastern Ruhr region, has reinvented itself since the decline of its coal industry with a determination typical of the Ruhrgebiet. The most visible symbol of this transformation is the Sri Kamadchi Ampal Temple, one of the largest Hindu temples in Europe, which draws tens of thousands of visitors to its annual festival. The Cineplex on Koenigstrasse sits in the pedestrianised city centre, serving a diverse urban population. In a city that contains both a Hindu temple procession and the ruins of a medieval castle, the cinema is simply one more layer in an unexpectedly cosmopolitan palimpsest.
