South of the Elbe in Hamburg's Harburg district, CinemaxX operates a multiplex on Moorstrasse that serves a part of the city with its own distinct identity. Harburg was an independent city until 1937 and retains a self-sufficient character, centred on the Technical University and a recently revitalised harbour area. The cinema provides MaxXimum Sound and modern digital screens to an audience that might otherwise face a longer journey north across the river. Its position makes it the natural screen for Harburg's residents and for visitors drawn to the Archaeologisches Museum or the green expanses of the Harburger Berge. It is a neighbourhood multiplex in the best sense, rooted in its community.
